What does temporary work mean?

There are several different ways of defining exactly what temping means.  It can be referred to as freelancing, interim, temporary or contracting.  No matter how it is referred to, they all essentially mean the same thing - someone employed by Hartley Resourcing who works on-site at our client's office on a temporary basis and is paid on an hourly rate.  Payments are made directly through the Hartley Resourcing payroll.


Would temporary work suit you?

Whether it is purely a lifestyle decision or an opportunity to broaden your skills, you can choose to work in a temporary position for many reasons.  Temping has many benefits, including:

  • It's a great way to learn new skills or work in a different function or industry
  • Greater exposure to different types of management styles and organisations
  • It is a flexible way of working – Bookings can be either full or part time and can last anything from a day to several months at a time.

What skills do I need to be a temp?

  • IT skills
  • Good educational qualifications
  • Willingness to be flexible and adaptable
  • Positive and cheerful approach to work
  • Ability to work hard and to deadlines
  • Office based work experience is required in most cases

What information will Hartley Resourcing provide me with prior to my assignment?

We will provide you with the Company Name, address, who to report to, the type of work you will be doing, the hours you will be working, your hourly pay rate and any health & safety issues that our client has informed us of.

How will I get paid?

Each week you will need to keep a record of the hours you work, excluding lunch breaks.  You will be given a timesheet to record these hours on and then you will need to get the hours authorised by your manager at the company you are working.  You then need to fax or e-mail the signed timesheet to us and we will pay you!

When do I get paid?

Hartley Resourcing run a weekly payroll, processing pay for the previous week's work.  Funds are available in your account by Friday, providing we have your correct bank details and signed timesheet by Friday at 3pm.

Do I get holiday pay?

Yes, you are entitled to four weeks' holiday pay per year, pro rata to the time you have worked for us.  You start to accrue holiday pay from day one of your first assignment.  Holiday is not carried over from one year to the next.  If you wish to take holiday, please let us know with at least one weeks notice.  Please also speak to your line manager and check that they are happy for you to take time off.

Who is my employer?

You will be employed by Hartley Resourcing Ltd. You will work at client sites on our behalf.

What information will I need to provide?

  • CV
  • Contact details
  • Proof of eligibility to work – (Passport or Long Birth Certificate and proof of NI)
  • P45 / HM Revenue & Customs Starter Checklist
  • Bank Details
  • Keep us informed of any changes to your availability

What will be expected of me while I am working as a temp for Hartley Resourcing?

Reliability. You will be given your standard hours of work at the beginning of your assignment, if you are unable to work these hours for whatever reason, please inform us. Equally, if you need to work extra hours, please ensure that you have cleared it with your line manager first.  If you are unable to go to work due to illness, please call us before 8.30am so we are able to arrange cover if necessary.

Professionalism. This includes being punctual and dressing appropriately.  We pride ourselves on our outstanding service so please remember you are the face of Hartley Resourcing when you are on a client site!

Confidentiality. All information that you come into contact with while you are working in an assignment, must be treated in the strictest confidence.

Will I have a notice period whilst on assignment?

Yes, you would be required to give a minimum of one week’s notice.

Who do I speak to if I have a problem?

Please call your consultant at Hartley Resourcing.

Can I work overtime?

Overtime policies vary from company to company – each booking is treated separately.  Contact your consultant before agreeing to work overtime hours.  Your consultant will confirm the overtime rule for that company and provide you with details of any overtime pay rates.
NB: Clients may refuse to pay overtime where additional hours have not been agreed in advance.

Can I temp whilst looking for Permanent roles?

Certainly. Lots of candidates temp whilst looking for the right Permanent role. It is also a really good way to see which environments you are best suited to.
